How to Decipher Best Recycling Symbols: A Guide in Two Parts (Part 2)

In Part 1 of our recycling symbols series, we discussed how the Mobius Loop, that familiar triangle of arrows, is universally used on packaging to indicate if it can be recycled. To review, we outlined the 7 types of plastic, and how each type is not necessarily recyclable through municipal recycling programs. We also talked about recycling symbols appearing on glass and cardboard packaging to remind consumers to recycle the product once the contents were used.

Recycling Symbols: Recycled Content or Recyclability?

The recycling symbol may also appear on packaging to show that the item already contains recycled materials. Instead of a “please recycle” message, or a 1 through 7 number, the symbol may contain a larger number, or percentage, under or inside the triangle. This number tells the consumer how much of the packaging is made from previously recycled materials. For example, a “20” in or under the triangle shows that the package is made up of 20% recycled material. There may also be a circle around the Mobius Loop to show that the symbol is about content, not recyclability.

Why is this important? By informing consumers about the level of recycled materials in a product, environmentally conscious consumers can choose products from companies with more recycled content. It enables consumers to give their business to manufacturers that support the environment and uphold practices that keep the environment in mind. It helps people live greener lives.

Recycling Symbols and the Paper Industry

One of the industries that uses this type of recycling symbol the most is the paper industry. There is a high demand for paper products with recycled content. The Recycled Paperboard Alliance even has a registered trademark for its symbol indicating 100% recycled material content.

Office supply companies and packaging manufacturers often highlight this label to promote their use of environmentally responsible sourcing. Whether it’s for tissue paper, file folders, or moving boxes, the presence of recycled content gives buyers a clearer picture of how eco-friendly their purchase is.

Unfortunately, the use of recycling symbols is not standardized across industries. While the Mobius Loop is universally used for recycling, there can be differences. This makes it harder to decipher, especially if the meaning changes across companies and countries.

Clarifying Confusion with Recycling Symbols

One organization, How2Recycle, is trying to minimize the confusion. The How2Recycle label was created to provide consistent and transparent on-package recycling information to consumers in North America.

Their recycling symbols give specific, detailed information about the item to the consumer:

  • How to prepare for recycling. Rinse, Empty and Replace cap, etc.
  • Information on how to recycle the item. Widely recyclable, not recycled by most communities, not recyclable, etc.
  • The type of recyclable material. Metal, plastic, coated paper, etc.
  • The recyclable part of the product. Can, tray, box, etc.

For packing with multiples materials, the recycling symbol will include instructions for each type. For example, a frozen dinner will have a recycling symbol with instructions for the box, the tray, and the plastic wrap.

We think it’s a great idea to standardize recycling symbols. The labels are concise, easy to read, and informative. More consumers will be able to understand the symbols and know exactly how to handle any recyclable item. Many companies think How2Recycle is onto something, too. Well-known businesses such as Walgreens, Kraft/Heinz and Smuckers have partnered with the organization.

Even as we wait for full industry standardization, consumers can do their part by paying closer attention to recycling labels, using community recycling guides, and staying informed. Every bit helps the cycle continue.

It will be interesting to see how recycling symbols become more used—and hopefully more standardized—as consumer demand influences manufacturers to step up their use of recyclable and previously recycled packaging. By labeling consumer goods, environmentally aware consumers can make more informed choices. Plus, more items will be recycled since households will know exactly what to do and not simply throw recyclables in the trash. All in all, it will be a win for the environment and community recycling efforts!
